Oh yes.
Your computer screen is not deceiving you. That is indeed Panera Bread’s new hot chocolate topped with chocolate chip marshmallows.
Looks like a serious dessert. It is.
Let’s start at the beginning.
I decided the other day that it just wouldn’t be right to sample such a unique form of a marshmallow atop a heaping bowl of hot chocolate without the little boy so I waited for the perfect opportunity to surprise him with a taste testing treat.
He was hoping for a cake taste test. Of course he was; anything I could have possibly surprised him with would have been wrong. It is the age I guess. Had I said I am taking you to taste cake, he would have said I would have preferred hot chocolate.
Anyway, once again I have proven him wrong, proven to be mother of the year and after last night’s bowl of hot chocolate, I am pretty confident he has finally learned to get excited for any possible dessert taste test event I ever spring on him again.
Meet Drew. The best Panera man ever. He earned this title not just because he made as he referred to it, “The Monstrosity of Hot Chocolates” but because he kindly swapped out the reduced fat milk for skim when I ever so sweetly asked if he could.
Much better.
Drew walked us through the hot chocolate process, giving us a real behind the scenes look at just how this bowl of goodness is made. He even let me snap 1,000 photos and entertained not only our questions, but our extreme giddiness oddly produced by the site of chocolate, whipped cream, and yes, chocolate chip marshmallows.
So first comes the milk (skim milk).
And then the pure chocolate…Lucky for us, the machine ran out so they quickly brought over a refill.
He jokingly offered me the opportunity to eat the chocolate straight from the bag he was holding. He clearly didn’t realize who he was talking to as eating straight from a pouch of chocolate is no joking matter and not something to tease about.
After the chocolate was poured into the steamed milk, Drew mixed it all up real nice.
Topped off with tons of whipped cream. And then caramel.
And more chocolate on top because I told him extra chocolate is never a bad thing. He found us amusing so he happily complied. Or maybe he found me scary and didn’t want to disobey, not really sure. Either way I reached my goal.
NOW PAY CLOSE ATTENTION:
That container Drew is carefully opening contains the SECRET RECIPE chocolate chip marshmallows.
He claims the marshmallows are made special for Panera and that corporate has yet to share the recipe with him. I wonder if they will share it with me?
He got us a tray because he said it is the biggest bowl of hot chocolate he has ever made (or even seen) at Panera Bread.
It was not easy for me to release the hot chocolate creation to the hands of the little boy but I guess I have grown up a bit and learned to be the adult in order for the child to experience maximum enjoyment.
Oh yes? Oh yes.
A chocolate chip marshmallow dipped in whipped cream, caramel and fudge.
Stick with me. I for sure know where it’s at.
We took the remaining hot chocolate to go.
Let me just add that when Drew gave us a to-go cup, he also gave us extra marshmallows. Panera Employee of the Year.

I haven’t been to Serendipity in a while but I do have a picture from my last visit.
First bite of dessert requires eyes to be closed in order to receive the full taste experience.
Yes, I realize I take my dessert seriously but if I didn’t, I probably would have received a dinky version of Hot Chocolate with only one marshmallow and no extra toppings. And that would have been sad for us all.
