It has been forever since I shared a What I Bought At Trader Joe’s style post!
Okay, let’s not get too excited about it — I didn’t buy that much over the weekend but at least we have something to look at and talk about from my food shopping!
I fell into a pattern of going to Trader Joe’s either later in the day on Thursday or Friday afternoons. There was a time when I went to Trader Joe’s a few times a week but I’ve really gotten things down to once a week — which is great. I love Trader Joe’s but I don’t really enjoy food shopping so I don’t want to go more than I actually have to go.
Anyway, I ended up doing my food shopping this past Sunday so I thought ahead to get some pictures from both Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods to share with you today.
I bought less than usual which I attribute to a few things:
- It’s summer
- I didn’t need to restock as much
- I forgot a few things (typical)
What I Bought At Trader Joe’s
I went to Trader Joe’s before stopping at Whole Foods mainly because I wanted to see what Trader Joe’s didn’t have so that I could then grab it at Whole Foods. Lately, Trader Joe’s is out of organic romaine lettuce (and butter lettuce) so it’s been a hit-or-miss random situation.
Yup, once again, Trader Joe’s was out of romaine and butter lettuce (what is going on?) AND the cute organic Persian cucumbers that I like to buy.
Here’s what I grabbed for this week:
- Organic Grape Tomatoes
- Sweet Potatoes
- Russet Potatoes
- Organic Old-Fashioned Rolled Oats
- Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
- Organic Chick Peas
- Frozen Blueberries
- Frozen Broccoli
- Frozen Corn
- Coffee (decaf + regular)
What I normally buy but didn’t need this week:
- Feta Cheese
- Balsamic Dressing
- Ezekiel Bread
- Other Frozen Vegetables
- Organic Steel Cut Oatmeal
- Peanut Butter
- Coconut Oil
- Sauces, Spices, Seasonings
What I Forgot:
- Organic Brown Rice (steam bags)
- Apple Cider Vinegar
What I Bought At Whole Foods
I was going to Whole Foods mainly for chicken nuggets but thankfully they had the lettuce that Trader Joe’s didn’t!
What I bought:
- Organic Romaine Salad Bags
- Organic Cucumber
- Organic Light Ranch Dressing (so good!)
- Organic Plant-Based Bolognese Sauce
- Bell & Evans Chicken Nuggets
My son has always loved the Bell & Evans Chicken Nuggets (I did too when I used to eat chicken) so I do my best to have them in the house for the random nights when he’s home for dinner and wants something simple. I make the chicken nuggets with some broccoli and a baked sweet potato and I feel like I just cooked something healthy. If you eat chicken, definitely try Bell & Evans chicken nuggets. They are more chicken than breading, and just so delicious. If I were ever going to eat chicken again, it would be these chicken nuggets.
Can we discuss the plant-based bolognese sauce?
I don’t think I’ve seen it before so I bought it to try it. I made it the other night for dinner with Banza pasta and vegetables. While it’s good and I would buy it again, no meat-eater would ever call it a sub for true bolognese sauce.
I hate cutting up fruit – so I don’t any longer. Instead, I buy precut fruit because I’ve weighed the cost vs my mood and it has become worth it to me to buy it already cut for me to eat. Sometimes I get a watermelon section (which to me is a compromise between not fully cutting up a melon myself and not buying fully precut) and sometimes I just buy a fruit bowl – either from Whole Foods or Stew Leonard’s.
I fill in with some items from Target quite often. I get my Banza pasta at Target as well as Horizon Organic Milk, boxes of tea (and sometimes coffee), and other random things (like Ben & Jerry’s pints of ice cream when my son calls me while I’m in the store asking for something sweet).
