Workout Variety + Boardwalk Runs Are My Favorite

Happy Monday! I hope you had a nice weekend. It’s hot here in New York but last week’s workouts were not affected by the weather. It’s summer, and I’m used to varying levels of heat and humidity. Granted, the worst of the heatwave is supposed to be today but I don’t find the early mornings a tough time for workouts.

Anyway, let’s take a look back at last week’s workouts. It was a great workout week with lots of workout variety and quality runs, including another boardwalk run! My boardwalk runs are becoming this summer’s favorite activity for sure! I’m so grateful that the boardwalk is open. It’s been so fun to run the boardwalk again and I think this summer especially, it’s been extra enjoyable to get out there and do something I like to do without feeling limited.

Monday – 45 Min Pure Barre/Walk

I didn’t get outside to walk for very long, maybe 30 minutes? I don’t remember.

Tuesday – 6 Miles

This turned out to be a good running workout. I made it up as I went along!

  • 1-mile warm-up
  • .25 hard/.25 easy/.50 hard
  • .25 easy/.75 hard
  • .25 easy/.50 hard/.25 easy
  • 1 mile hard
  • 1 mile cool down

Wednesday – 30 Min Run/20 Min Strength

I ran a quick 3 miles plus cool down to bring me to 30 minutes. Then, I created my own strength training workout while watching the news. For the most part, I prefer a Pure Barre or Lifetime workout to follow for my strength routines. Sometimes, however, I’m in the mood to do it myself.

Thursday – 5 Miles

It was a quick decision in the morning to run for the third day in a row. I don’t normally run three days in a row anymore but I kinda felt like it so I just went with it.

  • 1-mile warm-up
  • .50 hard/.25 easy/.25 hard
  • .25 easy/.50 hard/.25 easy
  • .25 hard/.25 easy/.25 hard/.25 easy
  • 1-mile full effort

Friday – 45 Min Warrior Sculpt

It worked out really well that it was a rainy morning because I did not plan on running and didn’t feel like a walk either. I chose Warrior Sculpt and really enjoyed it. I hadn’t done a Warrior Sculpt workout in a month so I’m glad I got back to it. Workout variety is so important to a routine.

Saturday – 3.5 Mile Walk

Sunday  – 7 Miles

I really enjoyed my boardwalk run for the third Sunday in a row!

We are kinda in a heatwave but I honestly felt fine the entire time. It did not really feel any hotter on the boardwalk than any usual summer morning run with the sun shining and no shade. Okay, maybe the humidity became more noticeable in the middle of the run. 🙂

I started out fast (under 9:00 min/mile) but it didn’t feel fast. My effort was on the easy side and my form felt strong so I decided to continue where I was at knowing very well that I would naturally slow down because I would eventually get hot.

I didn’t have a plan for how many miles I would run when I started but quickly decided to go 7 with the first mile as the warm-up and last mile as a cool down. The first 4 miles were naturally a progression run down to the low 8’s but then crept up above 9 for the next two miles. The cooldown mile likely felt like my hardest!

I didn’t forget that I want to write about the items I bring with me to summer boardwalk runs (I’m working on putting that together) but if I have to mention anything today, it’s underwear. Sweat-wicking underwear I think is often overlooked but I will tell you this — it’s critical. It really makes such a difference. I’ve had them for years but didn’t always ensure that I wore them every summer run. This summer, I am making it a point and really feel the difference. The style I have from lululemon is currently sold out but the boyshort style is available.
