Well, it’s time to accept that my workouts are fully driven by the weather forecast for now, until we reach springtime.
If I can get outside, I will absolutely take advantage of either an easy run or walk. If the temperature dips below freezing, or even if it’s slightly above but there’s a windchill involved, I will be going through my list of indoor workout choices.
Indoor workouts currently mean a choice of a few things:
- Pure Barre workout
- Elliptical
- Treadmill (running and walking)
I’m going to continuously mix up my indoor workouts to keep things interesting. My guess is that I will still be able to manage the weather outdoors at least once or twice a week (at least until it starts snowing). This will make my routine feel that much more varied. I love running my speed workouts on the treadmill but not so sure I am interested in adding in easy runs on the treadmill now too.
I’m finding I have gravitated lately to easy running outdoors and pushing it with speed workouts indoors on the treadmill. I’m not sure when this happened, but it’s how I like things right now. I don’t pay attention to pace or try to do anything specific when running outdoors, but once on the treadmill, I’m all about workouts and challenging my speed.
If you are in need, I’ve written several posts about running on the treadmill. Take a look at this post – workouts to try in the winter –as it contains a ton of great options.
Let’s not forget walking. This is probably the first winter of workouts that will include walking on a regular basis. I really don’t want to lose my outdoor walks, or walks in general! While I do like incline walking on the treadmill, I am going to do my best to still get outdoors walks in on a regular basis too. We shall see how it all goes I guess!
Last week’s workouts:
Monday – 6 Miles
I took advantage of the weather (almost 50 degrees!) and my time to run 6 miles outside today.
Tuesday – 1 mile outside/30 Min Elliptical
It was still 55 degrees so I figured I should be outside – but then it started raining (I no longer run in the rain) so I headed inside to the gym for the elliptical.
Wednesday – 45 Min Treadmill (incline walking)/Free Weights
Um, real feel of 11 degrees? I will definitely be indoors.
Thursday – 40 Min Pure Barre (full body)
I drove my son to school this morning, temperature said 24 degrees in my car = not a chance I will be outside.
Friday – 5 Miles (outside)
37 degrees and no mention of wind on the news = I can run outdoors. I definitely took advantage of this knowing that the weekend was not looking this warm.
Saturday – 5 Mile Speed Workout (treadmill)
The sound of the wind was enough to let me know I would be running indoors today. Considered a 30-minute speed workout but felt the desire to continue to 4 miles, and then 5 miles. I think this 5-mile workout was the longest speed workout I’ve run in a while.
I didn’t run anything too specific but it resembled something like this:
10 min warm-up + 1 min hard/1 min easy mixed with 2 min hard/1 min easy + 3 min hard/1 min easy thrown in too until I hit the 5-mile mark at slightly over 41 minutes.
Sunday – 35 Min Pure Barre (full body)/50 Min Walk (outside)
After Pure Barre, I was warmed up enough to walk outdoors. I needed to bundle up but I was not cold at all. So glad I got outdoors today!
