I felt so normal yesterday. My appetite felt human, I was more productive than I have been in days and I think my mood was that of a semi-polite person. I attribute it all to the sun actually shining. I can’t tell you how many days its been of rain, cold and dreary wind.
Produce does not go to waste in my house. Except for kale. I bought kale a week or so ago and it’s the one vegetable that will remain beyond its edible date in my fridge until I realize it needs to go in the garbage.
I waited all winter for fresh blueberries to be a decent price and now I don’t want them. Fresh blueberries were one of the last foods I consumed prior to coming down with that stomach virus in February and as hard as I tried to ignore this fact, my interest in them is gone. Frozen blueberries are fine but the thought of fresh blueberries, unless they are in the middle layer of a Red Mango parfait, make my stomach turn.
And because we are talking produce, I will mention the avocado on my counter which refuses to get ripe. I don’t think this has ever happened to me but I am pretty sure it’s a broken avocado.
Islanders playoff hockey starts tonight! I used to dream of an Islanders vs. Florida Panthers playoff series back in the 90’s so that I could pick up and go to Florida for the games. My younger self was able to randomly fly down to Florida with only hours of notice. My best friend Heather had moved to Florida when we were 15 ( I am still not over it) so any excuse to fly down to see her plus see my team was always welcome.
We took this picture last summer in the city when Heather was up here for a quick visit.
One time years ago actually, I booked a flight for the next day just because Heather called me to say she was eating a Publix chocolate cake. I got jealous and needed to have some cake too. I wish I could still do things like that but I can’t because I am now a responsible parent.
I am excited for my run this morning! The sun is finally rising early again and the wind is calm. Six miles at half marathon pace, here I come!

Does fresh produce go to waste in your house?
What’s on the workout agenda for today?
Do you have a Publix supermarket near you? I am jealous, I always loved that store!
You should make kale chips – even the younger two kids like them so they must be good! I think the sun had a normalizing affect on me as well yesterday too. I haven’t bought blueberries in so long and now I’m sad for you that they were a stomach virus food. Those are seriously the hardest aversions to get over and they can last a lifetime!

I make the kale chips but clearly I don’t enjoy them enough to use up the whole bag!
Ha-one of these days randomly fly down but bring Benji so you are a responsible parent and we will eat Publix cake and people watch Florida style!
don’t think it didn’t occur to me to maybe bring him down too this week! he would love to hang with you and laugh…and eat cake!
I would say that just about the only thing that goes to waste in my house are condiments like dressings and mayo and bread (I usually freeze bread, but Alex doesn’t like that, so he makes me leave it in the cupboard, and then it goes bad). Produce does not go to waste in this family, except by extreme accident.

I felt the same way when the same was out yesterday! And this morning’s run was great with no wind and the sun rising earlier. I hope spring is actually here now- but I have been saying that for weeks.

omg today’s weather was absolutely perfect for running!
Put a banana or tomato in a closed paper bag with the avocado and it will ripen quickly–I do it weekly. Btw, great picture of you with your friend.
I saw this yesterday and it is a game changer re: unripened avocado

It’s amazing what the sun shining can do to a person. I am SO excited for it to be relatively warm this weekend!

I try to use up all my produce, but I always end up forgetting about something and it goes bad. This usually happens because my drawers are in a weird place in my fridge and they’re white, so I can’t see what’s in them. I have a new fridge in my new house that has clear drawers at eye level so hopefully that will help!
Go Islanders! Hope to see you in a future round of playoffs 🙂

I am so happy that the Penguins won last night, you have no idea!
The produce in my fridge that goes bad is the random buys like cucumbers that I normally don’t eat too often, but was an impulse buy and I forgot about. Workout for me today was an easy run. It’s still cold out which sucks, but the sunrise was pretty. Have another great day!

I think it’s slowly warming up here! I am excited about it.
Fruit never goes to waste, but sometimes a 5-lb bag of carrots I got on sale/in bulk will start to get a wee bit mushy…

I stopped buying kale for that same reason! So annoying. My parents live in South Beach and I LOVE going to Publix when I visit–I wish we had one in D.C. They have the best bakery items, like guava pastries!

as a kid I loved their bakery! they used to make a rainbow bread that we found fascinating
Ha ha ha! Broken avocado. Cute. I put my kale into the freezer and then if I ever make smoothies I throw frozen kale leaves into the blender. I hope you enjoy your run today! So glad you’re having nice weather. Makes all the difference in the world.

Suzy recently posted…Side Effects
the weather makes an incredible difference! I should put kale in smoothies, I usually do spinach but to use up the kale, smoothies are a great idea
Herbs like cilantro always go bad! I’ve starting buying them dried because of that. I usually gobble up any produce before it’s bad, but if carrots go soft I feed them to Charlie. That puggle loves vegetables!

herbs would go to waste here too!
Ooh, 6 miles at half marathon pace sounds like an amazing sunrise run. I try not to waste produce, but it inevitably happens about every other week. I completely understand the sentiment of wanting a food, getting sick after you eat it, and not wanting it. It’s interesting how our minds work.

Kale is one veggie that never finds itself in my house, mostly because I know I’ll never use it and just end up throwing it away. I’m not keen on that or eggplant. Other than that, nothing really goes to waste since I’m kind of a freak about not throwing things away 😆

I never let anything go to waste but I just don’t care to use up the kale. funny to me actually but the kale chips just aren’t interesting me right now.
No publix–but used to go all the time when my grandma lived in Boca!
The broken avocado made me chuckle…..I bought some ROCK hard avocados the other day at the store that were on sale. A few other customers and I joked that they were on sale b/c they were so rock hard. Well I just checked–two days later and they are perfect. Your’s is definitely broken:((
Have a good sunny run!
my avocado was totally broken lol…. I need a trip down to boca to see my friends! it’s been too long. And need the trip to publix 🙂
Wasted produce is the worst! I try to use up everything when we get it to prevent spoilage, but something always manages to get forgotten. Omg…that red mango cup. Yum!

love my red mango 🙂
I feel you on the sun and feeling semi-human again. Like 100%. It makes a HUGE difference.
Also, broken avocados exist! It’s happened to me before, too!

Rachel recently posted…Running in the Cold, B-Town, and Eating all the Food [Thinking Out Loud]
such a difference, right?
Yeah, I’ve had a few funny avocados once or twice but I’m not that patient- I just get straight in there whether the avocado is ready or not. Sounds like a perfect day for a run, hope it was a good one 🙂

I miss those days! I totally booked my flight to eat the same cake, the best part is – this was before smart phones so she wasn’t even to send me the photos to entice me! I just knew I needed it based on discussion lol
I only like Kale Chips, which kind of negates the health value, but hey, it’s something! Bananas always go to waste at my house – I like them ripe, but not too ripe, and it seems like they turn from yellow to black in minutes.

That red mango cup looks heavenly!
Eilish Brazell recently posted…Thinking Out Loud | 4.14.16
yeah, I make kale chips but not often enough to use up the kale!
LOVING the early sunrise. makes me so happy. I was out at 5:45 this morning and could have gone out earlier with no headlamp. yay
isn’t it the greatest now that the sun is up early again?
