I Was Sick/Taper Week/LI Half Today

I did not intend to skip Friday’s post but I also didn’t intend to get sick Thursday night!

Oh. My. Goodness. I caught a hint of my son’s stomach virus which is bad any time of the year BUT ESPECIALLY HORRENDOUS three days before a half marathon!

I am feeling better now but it was not fun. Not at all.

Thankfully, I only dealt with body aches, a weird feeling stomach, crazy dizziness, and nausea.

Yes, when you are spared the actual vomiting, you are thankful.

Of course today’s half marathon was in the back of my mind the entire time that I was laying on the floor (don’t ask) but I am not stupid — if I truly didn’t feel up to it, if I didn’t return to normal eating as quickly as I did and if I still felt an ounce of dizziness, I would never run the LI Half Marathon today.

But, I am okay.

I fueled my way to better by snacking on black and white cookies (when asked what would make me feel better, cookies are what I came up with – I find black and white cookies so settling to the stomach), drank a ton of Tropicana OJ, got lots of rest and avoided my computer for 36 hours.

I can’t recall the last time I unplugged for so long but I must admit, it felt real good, even though I was sick.

Friday’s post was supposed to share my race outfit for today.

race ready outfit

Lululemon Run Swiftly Short Sleeve & Run Inspire Crops/Forever 21 Sports Bra/Pro Compression Low Trainers/Adidas Energy Boosts

Normally I wear a running skirt for races this time of year but I am going with my trusty Run Inspire Crops instead. It is first getting warm here which means I haven’t run much in my running skirts so my legs really aren’t used to the feeling and I want to be as comfortable as possible.

So I know we aren’t supposed to wear anything new on race day BUT I kinda decided to skip the headband in the above photo in favor of the new Lululemon Fast Paced Run Visor that I had to have and picked up yesterday.

Lululemon Fast Paced Run Visor

This will be my third year in a row running the LI Half so I know the course fairly well. It is not shady at all which means on a day like today, the sun is strong and on me a majority of the time.

I trust Lululemon enough to know that even though I have not worn this visor yet, it will be perfect.

Taper Week Workouts…

I actually didn’t deviate from my taper week workout plan, even with being sick on Friday since  Friday was a planned rest day anyway.

Let’s take a quick look at the rest of the week…

Pure Barre Studio Series & One Mile – I did not plan on running BUT I got new headphones (a little birdie bought me yurbuds) and I just couldn’t wait until Tuesday to test them out!

6.2 Miles –  If you asked me what pace I felt like I was holding for most of this run, my guess would have been 9:22.

What does that mean? It means that my running easy pace, what feels comfortable, is now much faster than it used to be.

Pure Barre Studio Series & One Mile Run – I have been trying to ease up on the miles this week as well as alternate the days that I run but it was so warm and sunny that I just could not resist getting out there…

running path

I knew that telling myself I would only go for a walk wouldn’t work because a walk would turn into a run so instead, I allowed myself one mile in the sunshine before heading back home to continue with the tapering vacation mindset.

6 Miles (plus short cool down) – I felt real good but still cut the run shorter than the usual (lately I have been running 8 miles it seems both Tuesday and Thursday).

Rest Day/Sick Day

3 Easy Miles! – Before getting sick I had planned my usual shake out run for today. I thought about skipping it but felt much better and really wanted to see how I felt while running in order to decide for sure about running the race.

I ran easy, as I would have regardless of being sick but overall, I felt normal. I wasn’t dizzy at all, got faster as I went and really could have kept going

Best part? My legs felt super rested.

Race Day!

So far this morning I feel back to normal. I am not ignoring the fact that I was just sick so I may have to adjust my race plan from going for my PR to just running where I feel my best.

I would say that I am annoyed, given how ready I was for this race, how well I feel that I tapered but what can you do?

At least I can run 🙂

I may or may not get my race recap up for tomorrow but in the meantime, be sure to follow me on instagram and twitter!

I’ve really miss being able to check in with everyone like I used to when I was blogging every day! At first it felt really weird but I am starting to get used to it…even when i don’t have time to comment I still make a point to read as many posts as I can.
I hope the race went ok today! Getting sick right before a race is never fun.
