WIAW- Taper Week & Yesterday’s Eats

Over the next few days, I will focus  more on carbs (if that’s even possible considering I LIVE ON CARBS) and slowly reduce my vegetable intake leading up to Sunday’s half marathon.

taper foods

Recent grocery store race food/taper week purchases but let’s be real here, I eat these foods anyway!

Watermelon has become an important part of my pre-race food plan. I find it hydrates me better than water and have definitely noticed a positive difference in how I feel hydration-wise during races, especially warmer weather races, when I consume lots of watermelon beginning a few days before the race.

Did you see the size of that watermelon?! Took me forever to cut up but for $8.99, it was totally worth it!

watermelon

Since today is Wednesday (already?!), let’s take a look at what else, aside from watermelon, I ate yesterday…

Breakfast:

The usual pre-run oats and blueberries with peanut butter (unpictured) followed by the usual post-run bowl of oats, berries, Skoop B-Strong Viva-Nilla and peanut butter.

oatmeal

Frozen berries are still making the mix pretty in pink and my obsession with Skoop continues! Don’t forget that you can save 20% sitewide as well as try the sample pack for $10 until April 30th!

Lunch:

I am still on a smoothie kick when I am home for lunch, totally off vegetables, salads and really, anything savory.

smoothie

This smoothie came out really yummy! In the mix:

  • frozen banana, blueberries & pineapple
  • scoop cooked oatmeal
  • handful spinach
  • ice
  • One scoop of Skoop B-Strong Viva-Nilla (I love it!!)
  • Peanut Butter
  • Granola on top

This was only one of my many cups of coffee yesterday!

Panera coffee

Dinner:

This mess in a bowl is a loaded baked potato: a little bit of broccoli and roasted brussels sprouts topped with hummus, avocado and a drop of barbeque sauce.

loaded baked potato

The whole hummus + avocado + barbeque sauce is seriously my favorite flavor combination at the moment, especially when paired with a giant baked potato.

I ate this real quick before heading into the city for an event in the evening. I never really know what to expect food-wise at events so it’s best that I eat something more than a snack in advance just in case.

Dessert:

Of course I hit up the wedding cake vendor at the event…

And I found the brownies….

And had some more cake…

That’s it… I’m picking up watermelon when I go shopping later today. I’ve been eating honeydew since watermelon has been a little harder to get, but let’s be real… it doesn’t even come close. And I really need to try Skoop. I’ve been looking around for a new plant-based protein, so I’ll probably end up looking into that one.

Yum! I need to get watermelon. They always have cut up spears at my TJ’s here, but for the first time last week they had the real deal to cut up! I just didn’t want to carry it back to my apartment. The struggle is real.

My taper week involves eating anything that’s sugary and carby and I make sure I don’t eat too much roughage or anything too spicy.

Bye-bye, restaurant loaded potato! Yours looks much better because: hummus and avocado. You should consider starting up your own delivery service. I’d take those pretty pink oats, too.

I tend to eat pretty much the same during taper week. The only thing that really changes is laying off the veggies the day before a big race and adding some extra protein (like a burger). My diet is already probably 75% carbs, so I don’t really need to load it any more than that. For me, I make sure I have enough protein and fat without changing too much else. wedding cake is the PERFECT taper fuel 🙂

I don’t need much change either to my diet, although, I do make it a point to eat watermelon during warm weather race time, I add a little more salt to my food, find the bigger potatoes at the grocery store and try to limit the veggies.

Hmm… I like carrot cake and cream cheese frosting.

Definitely like to cut them up, so I can eat as I cut. 😀 Then I wonder where the other half of the watermelon went. 😀
