I can’t believe we are into February already! It’s weird to me if I stop to think about it because it means that I’ve been in this running less routine for over a month now and still enjoying it.
I actually don’t feel as though I’m running less and it doesn’t feel like something is missing.
It’s just this feeling of YES, THIS IS WHAT I FEEL LIKE DOING. I’m where I’m supposed to be.
I’m definitely more in tune with my body and how I feel post-workout too. In addition to noticing a normal appetite, I’m noticing that I feel my best when I keep cardio and strength training separate. The one day this week that I combined 30 minutes on the elliptical with 30 minutes of Pure Barre was the only day this week that felt off for me in the hours following my workout. Just not in sync. Bloated. Uncomfortable in my skin. My muscles just felt puffy or something. It’s hard to explain, all I know is that when I don’t combine the two forms of fitness, I feel right, if that makes sense.
Was it a fluke? Maybe. I was at a good point in my cycle though so I can’t even blame my hormones. I will keep paying attention to how I feel in relation to my workouts because overall right now, my entire body, mentally and physically, feels in sync and at ease with running less and alternating cardio and Pure Barre days. It’s actually really weird because I didn’t notice before that wasn’t feeling my best. I can only see it now in comparison with my workouts.
I can’t tell you if alternating your workouts and running less makes sense for you or if it scientifically matters or proves beneficial, I can only tell you what I’m doing, noticing, and what I think is working for me at the moment.
Also! It’s really nice that I don’t think about the weather forecast. I’m not trying to/caring if I run outside. I’ve been SUPER OKAY with the treadmill. Maybe it’s because I’m only running a few days a week or maybe it’s because I’m not thinking about running 8 miles or 10 miles or 12 miles at a time. Whatever the reason, it’s making the winter a bit more bearable as a runner. I didn’t even know it was 12 degrees outside on Saturday until I saw the TV screen on the treadmill while I was running!
Oh, and I still consider myself a runner even if I’m running less. I still have the desire in me, I’m still eager to start the treadmill and see what I have to give. And, if you asked me to go run a half marathon with you tomorrow I know very well that I can. I’m not afraid that I’m losing fitness or my endurance or my running abilities. Runners are like elephants I think. We don’t forget. It’s not possible for me to forget what it takes/what it is like to run 13 miles at a time. Definitely not! I put in my time, so consistently over the years, that I just know my body and mind are not forgetting how to do it. Running is often more mental than anything if you ask me. And mentally, of course I remember how to do it and that makes me proud.
Monday – 1 Hour Pure Barre (Pure Results Arms)
I wasn’t sure if I wanted to run or do a Pure Barre workout but ultimately went with Pure Barre! The Pure Barre Pure Results Arms workout is 60 minutes and becoming one of my favorites.
Tuesday – 5 Miles (treadmill)
With snow on the ground, I headed to the gym in my community for the treadmill. 5 Miles in 42 minutes seems to be my place when I start off slightly conservative and then bump up my speed with intervals. I ranged mainly between 6.8 – 7.7. but did push it to up to 8.0 towards the end. Felt good!
Wednesday – 30 Min Elliptical/30 Min Pure Barre
It’s been a long time since I did one of my 30/30 combos! I first headed to my gym for the elliptical machine where I chatted with the nice lady in my community who was on the elliptical machine next to me. I’m never that friendly in the gym but she’s really nice and we had a lot to talk about! Made the time fly too.
Then I came home and chose a 30 minute Pure Barre workout – lower body intensive. It still involved core and arms but focused more on lower body work.
Thursday – 5 Miles (treadmill)
5 Miles in 42:xx again! See, I told you that’s my spot. I think I was a few seconds faster today although I didn’t follow anything specific. For this run, I may have started out slower for the first mile than I did on Tuesday but then went faster overall for the last 4 miles but still finished around the same time.
Friday – 1 Hour Pure Barre (Pure Results Abs)
This is an INTENSE Pure Barre workout but in a really good way. I find myself choosing the harder for me Pure Barre workouts lately because I enjoy the challenge.
Saturday – 6.2 Miles
With no planned distance in mind, this run FLEW BY. I say that a lot but seriously, I was approaching 6 miles before I knew it.
Started in my easy range but quickly worked my way to intervals (plus inclines of 1.0 – 3.0 throughout, I always forget to mention my inclines), ranging my speed between 7.0 for the low-end and 8.0 for the high-end.
Sunday – Pure Barre?
