Weekend Recap Based Around Salads, Pizza and Red Mango

Weekends sure fly by, don’t they? I am so glad I ran my errands on Friday as I had planned.

After we spoke on Friday, I met a friend for our weekly Panera coffee chat (I really need to cut down the coffee, I know I know) and then headed to Whole Foods because I was running low on steel-cut oatmeal which I buy from the bulk bins.

Of course I used the oatmeal as my excuse to grab my lunch from the food bar. I figured that reading the Whole Deal booklet while eating would balance everything out if I was able to score a few coupons for the items I needed to purchase.

I didn’t find a coupon worth using but my lunch was sure good.

Trader Joe’s became the next stop on my list.

  • Organic Carrots
  • Avocado
  • Bananas
  • Coconut Oil Cooking Spray
  • Granny Smith Apples
  • Plum Tomatoes
  • Greek Yogurt
  • Cage-Free Liquid Egg Whites
  • Oat Bran – Comes in a new canister instead of in a bag; I use the oat bran to make breadcrumbs
  • Frozen Blueberries – couldn’t find fresh at a decent price!
  • Frozen Veggies
  • Onion
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Lemonade

Of course they were out of the popcorn we just talked about and I forgot to buy the frozen Wild Shrimp.

This week Trader Joe’s had a special five-pound bag of Granny Smith Apples for $4.49 which works out cheaper than buying apples individually.

Considering I eat at least one apple a day, this qualifies as excitement in my world.

IMG_3060

If you aren’t eating your apples with some form of nut butter and chocolate chips, I don’t understand and ask that you explain to me your reasons as to why not.

I hate running to multiple grocery stores but I can’t pass up some of the deals at my local produce market.

IMG_3058

This week’s sales:

  • Cauliflower – 97 cents each
  • Asparagus- 97 cents a pound
  • Tropicana Orange Juice –  $1.97 each
  • Strawberries – I forget exact price but when you are already saving so much money, you add them to your cart just because you need them.
  • Pop Chips – $1.50 a bag

Errands out of the way is always a good feeling.

So is running in my Lulu Lemon Pace Setter skirt again. Saturday morning was my last long run before this Sunday’s half marathon.

I broke out the skirt and Pro Compression socks to test out my race outfit possibilities. I actually had a great run and attribute part of the reason to my legs feeling free and not overly bogged down with too many layers of clothing.

IMG_3079

Coming home to my favorite post-run meal is almost as wonderful as locating Red Mango’s newest flavor, Oreo.

IMG_3049

If you follow me on Instagram, you already knew that I was on mission to taste the new flavor.

IMG_3084

The Oreo sample was served in a decent sized cup with a spoon. Based upon my high level frozen yogurt experience, Red Mango’s Oreo flavor tastes the most like an Oreo versus any other store I have tried.

I still went with original yogurt though in my parfait. Oreo is more for a dessert.

And since we are talking food, I have been finding myself craving pizza way more often than normal.

IMG_3093

I like when you order pizza (the corner slice from a grandma pie) in a restaurant and it comes all fancy on a real dish rather than a paper plate.

IMG_3094

Paired with a giant chopped greek salad, I could eat this meal every single day right now.

But I didn’t have it again yesterday. Nope. I had one of my other favorite meals instead.

unnamed (252)

Your are correct- this gigantic salad is from Maoz, my favorite vegetarian spot in Manhattan. I took the little boy into the city for the day to walk around…and so that I could get this salad.

Their roasted broccoli and cauliflower is just to die for. I layer it in the bowl with hummus, spinach, chick peas, carrots, cabbage, cole slaw, carrots and goodness knows what else. Some of the toppings available vary each time I go but they never disappoint.

My son gets the falafel sandwich but he doesn’t often let me take pictures of his food. In fact, he torments me over the whole taking pictures of meals and other things that I find of interest to share with you.

He had no issue playing around with the photo booth at the NHL store yesterday though.

He just won’t let me share the picture we took together so you just get to see my silly face instead.

Being that this is a taper week for me, running will be scaled back and alternated with light crosstraining in between. I will get more into my version of a taper plan tomorrow!

Did you race over the weekend? How did it go?

What are you craving these days?

Favorite type of pizza? I love a good veggie slice but I also love a corner piece from a grandma pie – the extra crispy crust is the best!

How do you eat Granny Smith apples?!?! I can’t go a day without an apple or two either, but even the thought of GS makes me shudder — too tart! I guess nut butter and chocolate help, though. And I’m kind of weird when it comes to pizza… I’ll eat almost all kinds, but my favourite is basically just dough, sauce, and extra cheese. It’s the same like with spaghetti — I prefer buttered noodles with parm 😆

The peanut butter and chocolate totally balances out the tartness to the Granny Smith. They have always been my fave, especially because they are so crisp. If you warm them, they get more sweet than tart. I think I need one right about now…

Mmmm that greek salad + pizza looks amazing. I’m sure I could eat that every night as well!!

P.S. I LOVE your new blog header!!

I love Maoz!!! Were you at the location on 8th and Broadway?? I lived around the corner from there. They actually know me there (well they did know me, I’m sure there’s a pretty quick employee turnaround ;)). Their cauliflower is SO good!

    • The Cookie ChRUNicles April 7, 2014, 7:58 am

No I was at the one on 40th and Seventh Avenue but I always wanted to check out the one downtown! Good thing there isn’t a Maoz too close to my house because I would be eating there every day- that cauliflower is just ridiculous.

I hate making multiple trips to the grocery store too but sometimes it’s absolutely worth it! And I LOVE those yellow boosts and the hot pink compression! Really cute! I love the Lulu skirts that I have because they have pockets for me to put stuff in underneath the skirt layer. I’m excited for your race!! I know you don’t like to do them anymore but I like when you do them so I can hear all about it! All your food looks so tasty! And a pizza craving – when it strikes, you just gotta go with it! 🙂

    • The Cookie ChRUNicles April 7, 2014, 12:24 pm

The pockets are the best, especially those front ones for my jelly beans and raisins and the zipper in the back from my license etc.

  • Sarah April 7, 2014, 10:13 am

You can blame me for your pizza cravings 😉 slash now I’m blaming you because I had just gotten them under control and now they’re back in full force. I have never been to red mango but if it’s as good as sweet frog and orange leaf then I think I’ll be a fan.

    • The Cookie ChRUNicles April 7, 2014, 12:23 pm

Red Mango is separate, apart and above the rest of the yogurt store chains. It’s a totally different frozen yogurt, I find it to be more like a sub for a lunch/meal since it is a healthier yogurt. Their dessert-type flavors are good too but I like the greek and the original as a lunch with berries and granola and chocolate chips. I am curious what you would think of it actually!

  • Ashley @ Kick Ash Mom.com April 7, 2014, 10:26 am

We just had Dewey’s Pizza here in St. Louis and We tried something called the green lantern. It’s red sauce, cheese, artichoke, onions, and pesto. It was amazing

  • Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl April 7, 2014, 11:21 am

Wow, you scored BIG on those veggies. That is some cheap cauli!! I’m jealous…I just paid 2.99 🙁

    • The Cookie ChRUNicles April 7, 2014, 12:21 pm

I am so glad someone appreciates a great price of cauliflower like I do! I bought three heads for this price and will go back for more before the sale ends!

  • Lauren @ LoveChocolateLife April 7, 2014, 4:57 pm

Race? I did not take place in a race but I ran !! 10.8 miles with my girlfriend I am feeling stronger every week!
Cravings these days? Hmm I actually have been craving sandwiches and bread lately.. weird?
Favorite type of pizza? mmmmm Veggie slice or if im feeling crazy buffalo chicken yummmm

    • The Cookie ChRUNicles April 8, 2014, 10:04 am

That’s such an awesome feeling when you can tell you are getting stronger each week! I love veggie pizza too!

  • Lauren April 7, 2014, 6:39 pm

Hey girl that pizza looks awesome. All the food porn in this post is making me hungry! I’m dying to buy a Lululemon pace setter skirt. I tried one on around Christmas time and have been lusting after it ever since. It just looks so cute on people!

  • Ashley @ Brocblog April 7, 2014, 7:19 pm

I need to see if my TJs has that bag of apples! I eat a green apple almost every afternoon because they’re the best. I was raised in Chicago and now live in LA so I don’t eat pizza very much anymore because they don’t do it right out west but when Im home its deep dish all the way.

    • The Cookie ChRUNicles April 8, 2014, 10:02 am

My goodness how I love Chicago deep dish! Gino’s East and Giordano’s. Yum. I recall the airport selling Gino’s so that you could take it with you. I really need to get back to Chicago just for the pizza!
